My Journey

Unlike most therapists,  I trained as a speech therapist because I had an autistic son.  After having already seen the impact from the inclusion of  some basic behavioural approaches and the positive changes following dietary changes, I wanted to explore what other approaches were available within this field alongside the limited recommendations of using PECS or signing.

The skills I have learnt as I have progressed along this journey have continually been shared with my clients and their families, enabling others to benefit from a wider range of additional techniques which might be beneficial to some clients, whilst retaining the belief that despite the same diagnosis, each client remains an individual with differing likes and dislikes and therefore there is no one approach that fits all, requiring a tailored support specific to them.

Experience

I have almost 20 years working as a private  speech therapist supporting autistic clients and their families.  My clients range in level of verbal ability, with a special interest in non verbal clients and those with Oro Motor difficulities.

Despite no longer being able to run around after my more lively clients as a complication of surgery, I am still able to offer guidance and support through parental coaching or involvement of support workers such as ABA providers/tutors via online services as required. This particularly applies to their speech progression.

My primary focus is supporting clients in development of their Oro motor skills using approaches such as Talk Tools as this can be done online following the initial face to face meeting. I am also able to provide  PROMPT input locally, as this requires weekly input.

Many autistic children who present as non-verbal have issues with Oro motor skills such as  planning which  restricts their progress in producing speech. These issues are often seen in other conditions such as Dyspraxia, Cerebral Palsy and  Down's Syndrome.

I have over 20 years experience working with a wide range of providers including ABA programmes both in the UK and in France. This includes specialist VB schools in the UK and ABA schools in France in addition to numerous home programmes both in the UK and overseas. This enables me to offer individual support for those following these programmes to develop oro motor skills for eating and speech.
